There are several three barrier islands, with the three most popular being Longboat Key, Siesta Key and Lido Key. However other island living places include Bird Key, Casey Key, Venice Island, Anna Maria Island, Holmes Beach and Bradenton Beach.

Siesta Key

Of all the Sarasota beaches, Siesta Key always gets the most attention because it has received several awards from worldwide travel and vacation publications. This is mostly because of the clean, soft, white and powdery sand that has become the hallmark of the beach. In addition to the main public Siesta Key Beach there are two other smaller beaches, Crescent Beach and Turtle Beach. Crescent beach is long and wide, with plenty of room to park nearby, restrooms, showers, lifeguards, a beach shop, and a concession stand that sells quality, reasonably-priced food. Turtle Beach is picturesque and offers a totally different experience. Rugged and rocky with shells, shark bones and teeth, it is a good place for a family midday picnic. Best of all Siesta Key is a township with yearlong residents, some who have lived there their whole life. Its township is also popular in its own right with a vibrant night life, an old town charm and great eating places.

About Longboat Key

Longboat Key also has a township but unlike Siesta Key, it is an incorporated city/town with their own city/town government. Longboat Key beaches are largely private, belonging to the upscale vacation residences and resorts that call the 10-mile long beach home. Where there is some public access to the beach, theres very little parking and no public amenities like restrooms, playground equipment and lifeguards. There are more than 70 developments on Longboat Key, each with distinctive characteristic and selling points.

About Lido Key

Situated between Siesta and Longboat Keys, Lido is the smallest of the three islands and divided into three smaller beaches; Lido Beach, North Lido Beach, and South Lido Park. The main Lido public beach includes a parking area for 400 cars, restrooms, a concession stand, a gift shop, cabana beach rentals, and playground equipment for the little ones. North Lido Beach is secluded with swift currents and no lifeguards on duty. It is more of a lounging beach than a swimming one. South Lido Park has 100 acres of Australia Pines and volleyball courts, picnic areas, restrooms, nature trails, and playground equipment. Lifeguards are on duty in the summer. Lido Keys big selling point is its close proximity to St. Armands Circle and downtown Sarasota. Walking distance is less than 5 minutes.

Lakewood Ranch

Sprawled out on 13,500 acres of land, Lakewood Ranch is one of the nations foremost master planned communities and the fastest selling. And it is right here on the Suncoast just about 10 miles east of downtown Sarasota. With 10 villages featuring several different neighborhoods ranging from apartments to luxury estate homes, there is a life style for everybody. Tee off one of three golf courses, play polo, cricket or enjoy a game of tennis on any one of the 18 courts. The restaurants are too numerous to be listed; from the casual to gourmet. Lakewood Ranchs a downtown can best be described as a combination of modern elegance with old town Disney-esque mainstreet.
